Maratha Talwar & Mardani Khel
A "Maratha Talwar" refers to the sword used in the martial art "Mardani Khel", which originated with the Maratha warriors of Maharashtra, India. This sword is often called a "Patta" and is characterized by its unique design, allowing for agile movements and effective close-quarters combat. It is typically paired with a "Vita" (a corded lance) in the Mardani Khel practice.
The style is known for its emphasis on light armor and adaptability to the hilly terrain of the region, popularized by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Maratha Empire & Mardani Khel
Mardani Khel began its rise to prominence during the early 1600s when the Deccan Sultanates relied on the guerrilla tactics (Ganimi Kawa) of Maratha units led by Shahaji. His son, Shivaji Raje Bhosale, learned the art of fighting from a young age and by his adolescence was already proficient in the use of various arms.
